Committee releases eight-team field for NCAA national championship tournament

INDIANAPOLIS -- The National Collegiate Women’s Ice Hockey Committee announced on Sunday the field of eight teams which will compete for the 14th National Collegiate Women’s Ice Hockey Championship. Quarterfinal competition will be conducted on the campuses of the participating institutions, while the 2014 Women’s Frozen Four will be hosted by Quinnipiac on March 21 and 23 at TD Sports Bank Center in Hamden, Connecticut.

Eight teams are selected for the championship. Of the eight teams, the top four teams are seeded.

Three conferences were awarded automatic bids for the 2014 tournament. The remaining five teams were selected at-large. The automatic qualifying conferences and their representatives are the Western Collegiate Hockey Association: Minnesota, ECAC Hockey: Cornell and Hockey East Association: Boston University.  Boston College, Clarkson, Harvard, Mercyhurst and Wisconsin were selected as at-large teams.

The quarterfinals will be played Saturday, March 15 with two teams competing at each of the four quarterfinal sites. The winning team from each quarterfinal will advance to the 2014 Women’s Frozen Four.

Minnesota enters the tournament as the No. 1 seed and will host Boston U. Cornell, the No. 2 seed, will host Mercyhurst. Clarkson enters the tournament as the No. 3 seed, and will host Boston College. Wisconsin, the No. 4 seed, will take on Harvard. All game times will be updated and posted on NCAA.com.

Semifinal games will be played at 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. Eastern time, Friday, March 21. The championship game will be played at 3 p.m. Eastern time, Sunday, March 23.  All three games will be streamed live on NCAA.com.

Minnesota will look to claim its third consecutive National Championship title after defeating Boston U. 6-3 in last year’s championship game.
