Coaching Spring Hockey - Meet My Team

It is with great pleasure to announce that I will be back on the bench for the spring hockey season! I have been asked to coach the Ottawa Valley Elite U10 Girls Hockey Team and graciously accepted! Players on the team come from Smiths Falls Ontario (my hometown), Cornwall, and the throughout the Ottawa Valley.  Even though it still seems early in the spring season, my team has already been on the ice a few times and I have to say that I am thrilled with the talent of the players who were recruited.

It has been a long time since I last coached spring hockey.  In fact, the last spring hockey team that I coached was with current Montreal Stars player Vanessa Davidson when we were behind the bench of the mighty Montreal Ice Storm U12, U14, and U16 teams.  On that team, which was quite a few years ago now included current Team Canada superstar Marie-Phillip Poulin along with Laurianne Rougeau who was named to the Senior National Team for the 2012 World Championships and I watched score her first International Goal today versus Russia in Canada’s 14-1 victory.

For the Ottawa Valley Elite U10 Girls Team, we start our spring season at the Outaouais tournament April 20th 2012.  The team is comprised of some great skaters, and some that can shoot the puck very well.  Our defence look solid and we have great goaltending.  At practice we have focused on getting the shot away quickly, getting traffic to the net and entering the zone wide to create space in the offensive zone.  Most of my team will be playing at the Provincial Tournament this upcoming weekend, and I will be heading to Burlington, Vermont to cheer on some of my former players and good friends during Canada’s semi final and final of the Women’s World Hockey Championships.

I have already thoroughly enjoyed the practices that we have had so far, and am really looking forward to seeing the young players during game situations! Stay tuned for updates as I plan to keep a blog of my lesson’s learned while coaching a group of ten year old players this season.
